08 Nov Cindy’s Story
It’s our honor to post new stories about the lives that are being transformed here at Adult & Teen Challenge in Shenandoah Valley, Virginia. We hope you enjoy reading Cindy’s story about God’s work in her life.
1.What’s your first name?
2.How long have you been in the program?
3.Tell us a little about your upbringing?
I grew up in a Christian home. My father was a previous marine so I knew the difference between right and wrong. However, my parents did go through a lengthy, rough divorce. My mom has always been there for me for love and support. I have an older sister but my older brother is deceased.
4.When did you start using drugs?
I started having a few beers when I was a senior in high school. I drank socially at parties.
5.What led to you making the choice to use drugs?
My boyfriend in high school drank and smoked pot so I did it with him.
6.What was your rock bottom that brought you to Teen Challenge?
I’ve been to several secular rehabs and tried to stay sober on my own and failed. I finally surrendered and came to Teen Challenge for a last resort for help.
7.What are you plans for the future?
I want to be a good wife and mother. Also, I want to utilize my time in helping others to seek God in their recovery. I have a mentor in Woodbridge, Desiree, and she is with Common Recovery. Desiree goes into the jails and offers Bible classes along with circle of addiction classes and I want to help her.
Psalm 37:4 “Take delight in the Lord and He will give you the desires of your heart.”
9.What one piece of advice would you give to an addict that might be reading this right now?
There are many tools to leading a sober life that one can learn but the most important one is having faith and trusting in God.
