Clean Time is Not Enough
How long is long enough? The amount of clean time you have until your selfish flesh tells your mind that you have it under control, that you don’t need God or anyone else anymore and that you can do this alone.
Does clean time really matter? Within the past year I have heard of so many stories of relapse, overdoses because of relapse and deaths. Story after story breaks my heart more and more. Whether these broken people did a program or got clean themselves, I always wonder how long they were clean before these tragedies happened. Some could of been a week while others could of been two or three years, which brings me to my point. Clean time is not going to save you all your life…it’s God, your relationship with Him and what He does in you that will save you and set your free completely.
“I am the vine and you are the branches. The one who remains in Me, and I in him, will bear much fruit. For apart from Me you can do nothing.” John 15:5
Without God…you can do nothing, I can do nothing, we can do nothing. It doesn’t matter how long you have been clean or if you got sober without a program. You still need God day after day, week after week and year after year to keep pushing through sobriety and living an addiction-free lifestyle. When you think you can do life on your own after recovery your flesh tends to get in the way and desire more and more of what the world offers. The more your flesh gets in the way, the less God is evident in your life and in you.
“I can do all things through Christ who gives me strength.” Philippians 4:13
These two verses are expressing the same truth but in totally different ways.
With God…you can do all things, I can do all things, we can do all things.
The stories I have been hearing has shown them that these people edged God out little by little because their flesh took over their life more and more. Do not let that happen to you. Make sure you keep God in the center of your life everyday, no matter how long you have been clean. The Holy Spirit God gives you allows you to live a life you never dreamed of while your flesh can drag you into darkness year after year without you even realizing it.
