Colleen’s Story

Colleen’s Story

My name is Colleen and I’m a graduate of Shenandoah Valley Adult Teen Challenge. Throughout high school, I began to experiment with party drugs like weed and alcohol. I  wanted to fit in with the world and desired to be like everyone else. I left home at the age of 17 to go to college, experiencing my first taste of freedom. Before long, I got caught up with the wrong crowd and started using cocaine and smoking crack. I dropped out of school and at the age of 19, I used heroin for the first time and everything fell apart – it consumed me. I lost myself and all the relationships in my life that I held dear to me.

I spiraled out of control and spent years on the streets, in abusive relationships, in jail and different treatment facilities. I tried methadone maintenance programs, meetings and even prescription medication, but nothing seemed to fill the void that was gradually getting bigger. In a state of humility and brokenness, I walked through the doors of Teen Challenge and God began to reshape me. His love in my life was a force stronger than any drug addiction. It is through my new relationship with Christ, the dedicated staff at Teen Challenge and the relentless love of the Father that I am able to stand here today – alive and free!! Now, my journey continues as I plan to attend Bible college next year and continue to share with others the grace and hope that has transformed my life!
