Discipleship in Recovery: A Christian Approach
Central to the mission of Adult and Teen Challenge Virginia is a powerful biblical principle: Discipleship. In Christian understanding, discipleship is about following and learning from Jesus Christ. As Jesus himself said, “Come, follow me, and I will show you how to fish for people!” (Matthew 4:19 NLT).
In the context of recovery, mere abstinence from substances is just a first step. Real transformation and healing require something deeper: a relationship with Christ. “Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; old things have passed away; behold, all things have become new.” (2 Corinthians 5:17 NKJV). This verse is foundational to understanding the profound change that occurs through faith-based recovery.
Many individuals ensnared by addiction feel hopelessness and desolation. But with the guiding light of discipleship, they can find a pathway out of the darkness. The trust and belief that they can indeed overcome addiction and that a fulfilling life is within reach are essential. Through discipleship, this trust is built.
It’s those who’ve overcome their own battles with addiction and have leaned on their faith to find renewal (the disciples) who play a vital role. They exemplify a life of sobriety and offer guidance, serving as testament to the power of faith and discipleship. As Proverbs 27:17 reminds us, “As iron sharpens iron, so a friend sharpens a friend.”
